Elementary Education lays the foundation of a successful society by giving children the chance to reach their highest potential both as learners and productive citizens. In the near future, our elementary students will be expected to compete academically on a global scale. The School of Education Teacher Preparation Program at Nevada State College is prepared to meet that challenge by producing educators who will lead the way in the most advanced educational strategies, teaching methods and academic research. What makes the Nevada State program unique is the immediate placement of teacher candidates in the elementary classroom and instruction in innovative, research-based teaching methods. Courses are conducted at partnership schools where Nevada State students are continually exposed to veteran educators demonstrating the best practices for student learning. Our teacher candidates are instructed in teaching methods such as guided reading, Thinking Maps and Words Their Way and then given opportunities to exercise these methods under the careful guidance of college faculty. Upon graduation, our teacher candidates are experienced in curriculum planning, classroom instruction and professional development. Their smooth transition into academic employment is, in part, a result of 100 field hours required to complete our elementary education program. Several of our teacher candidates have been employed by schools in which they conducted their field requirements.
It is the goal of Nevada State College of Education to produce educators who realize that the goal of education is not only to meet and exceed today's academic standards but to prepare elementary students for the challenges they will face in the future.
It is our belief that analytical thought, critical thinking and creative problem solving are the keystones to all learning and that our teachers must be prepared to instill these skills in their students at the earliest point possible if they are to meet the challenges of the future.
The Teacher Preparation Program offers three elementary education degrees. Students become eligible for a teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education.
