Technology Support

Below are the types of technology supports available to students with disabilities

Taped or Text in CD Format
Nevada State College produces alternative text formats in-house and contracts with other agencies to provide quality books on tape or in CD format when necessary.  Students who require books in alternative format should meet with the C.L.A.S.S. staff as early as possible and complete an Accommodation Request form indicating the title, author, edition number and ISBN number for each book that the student wants on tape or CD.  Students must purchase the books before requesting an alternative text format.  Also, two weeks notice is needed in order to produce alternative format books and/or obtain them from outside resources and have them shipped to the school.  More time may be needed if the student is placing an alternative format book order at the beginning of a semester.

If a book on tape or CD is not available from an outside agency, the student should check to see if the traditional textbook is available for purchase in an alternative format such as an e-book.  E-books are electronic versions of books that the student can access on a disk, CD, or over the internet.  Many students prefer the versatility of e- books over the traditional text book and even books on tape.  An e-book can be easily enlarged on a computer screen as well as read out loud using adaptive computer software.

If a book on tape or an e-book is not available and the student requires that material to be audio taped, the student must complete an Accommodation Request form as soon as the student has registered for C.L.A.S.S.es and submit the form to the C.L.A.S.S. office with a copy of his or her course schedule.  The student should also submit a copy of the course syllabus as soon as it is available to facilitate the taping of the text in the order in which it will be needed.

Textbooks will be returned to the student when the assignment has been completed.  In exchange, the student must return all taped materials. If a student fails to return the taped materials at the end of the semester, a hold may be placed on the student’s registration and transcript.  The C.L.A.S.S. may bill the student for the cost incurred in the production of the taped materials.

Students needing assignments or handouts taped should submit an additional Accommodation Request form for each assignment or handout.  Requests should be submitted with seven (7) days advance notice of the date needed.
Students are advised that texts are read onto tape by computer assisted programs, volunteers, student workers, and other readers without the availability of a professional recording studio.  Students regularly in need of taped text books are strongly encouraged to contact Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic to obtain their own personal memberships to this text reading service that utilizes professional recording studios and has a standing library of taped text.  The C.L.A.S.S. office can assist the student with the application process.

All students are encouraged to learn to use the adaptive text reading software that is available for use on the adaptive computers located in the computer lab.  Students can independently use the adaptive software to read text aloud.  Students do not need to submit special requests to use the equipment in the computer lab.  The computer lab is generally open in the evening and on weekends, making it very accessible.
Enlarged Text/Brailled Text
The student must complete an Accommodation Request form as soon as the student has registered for C.L.A.S.S.es and submit the form to the C.L.A.S.S. office with a copy of his or her course schedule.  The student should also submit a copy of the course syllabus as soon as it is available to facilitate the enlarging/brailling of the text in the order in which it will be needed.

The student must obtain the text book and submit it to the C.L.A.S.S. office as far in advance as possible.  A minimum of seven (7) days notice is required for any individual assignment.  The C.L.A.S.S. will notify the student when the text has been enlarged/brailled.

Text books will be returned to the student when the assignment has been completed.  In exchange, the student must return all enlarged/brailled materials.

If a student fails to return the enlarged/brailled materials at the end of the semester, a hold may be placed on the student’s registration and transcript.  The C.L.A.S.S. office may bill the student for the cost incurred in the production of the enlarged/brailled materials.

Students needing assignments or handouts enlarged/brailled should submit an additional Accommodation Request form for each assignment or handout.  Requests should be submitted with seven (7) days notice of the date needed.
Equipment Loans
Tape recorders are available for loan to students that qualify for student use as a C.L.A.S.S.room accommodation.  Lectures of the instructor are the intellectual property of that instructor and are subject to copyright laws.

Students needing equipment loans should contact the C.L.A.S.S. office at least seven (7) days in advance of the start of the semester.

All equipment must be returned to the C.L.A.S.S. office at the end of the semester or when a C.L.A.S.S. is dropped.  If equipment is not returned, a hold will be placed on the student’s registration and transcript.  If the equipment is damaged, the student is responsible for reporting the damage to the C.L.A.S.S. office as soon as it is discovered.

Students are responsible for the payment for all repairs needed due to damage to the equipment while the equipment is in their care.  The student will be billed for the cost of all repairs completed by a service center authorized by Nevada State College.
