Procedures to Request Accommodations
Read the following instructions to understand how and when to request accommodations.
- Requesting Accommodations
- Students who wish to request accommodations on the basis of their disability must initiate that request at the Center for Learning Assistance and Support Services. While later correspondence may be conducted by phone or e-mail, initial accommodation requests must be made through personal contact. Such requests should be made as early as possible in order to assure the appropriate documentation has been submitted and that necessary arrangements can be made in a timely manner. Nevada State College will make every effort to respond to the appropriately filed requests in an expedient manner, but may not be able to assure the immediate availability of needed accommodations without reasonable (timely) advance notice from the student.
- Accommodation Eligibility
- In order to fully evaluate requests for accommodations or auxiliary aids, Nevada State College requires documentation of the disability, consisting of an evaluation by an appropriate professional that describes the current impact of the disability as it relates to access to education and the accommodation request. This documentation serves two purposes: (a) it establishes that the individual is a person with a disability as defined by law and eligible for protection; and (b) it is used by the institution to determine what, if any, accommodations must be made in order to assure the individual has equal access to programs and services.
- It is the student’s responsibility to provide Nevada State College with documentation of the disability. A student may choose to submit documentation of a disability at any point during a semester; however, accommodations cannot be enforced retroactively. Accommodations can only begin once appropriate documentation is submitted to the C.L.A.S.S. and has been deemed acceptable.
- The C.L.A.S.S. administrator has been designated the responsibility of receiving, holding, and evaluating documentation of disability on behalf of the administration of NSC. This responsibility extends to determining which accommodations are to be provided to students with disabilities to ensure institutional compliance under Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Documentation provided will be reviewed by the C.L.A.S.S. professional staff to evaluate accommodation requests. The evaluation process includes a review of the documentation in the context of equalizing academic and social program access, the fundamentals and standards of the program, course, service or benefit requested. Students are also required to meet with a C.L.A.S.S. administrator for a personal in-take interview during which time the preferences and needs of the requester will be discussed. The evaluation process will result in a generated list of potential reasonable accommodations that comply with federal mandates ensuring accessibility to Nevada State College programs and activities. Final determination will consider potential effectiveness, preferences of the requester, full inclusion best practices and the likelihood for undue financial burden.
