C.L.A.S.S.room Accommodations

The following are C.L.A.S.S.room accommodations available to students with disabilities.

Note Takers
Students should complete the Accommodation Request form for course note takers as soon as they register each semester and, in any event, as soon as the need is apparent.  Every effort will be made to accommodate mid-semester requests, but the C.L.A.S.S. office experience is that such requests become increasingly difficult to fill as the semester progresses.  The student must list on the request form each course in which a note taker is needed.

The student will be responsible for giving a copy of the accommodation letter to the professor for each C.L.A.S.S. in which a note taker is needed.  Students that request note takers before the start of the semester will be able to pick up their accommodation letter from the C.L.A.S.S. office on the first day of C.L.A.S.S.. The note taker may be secured with the professor’s help in accordance with the protocol outlined in the student’s accommodation letter. Once a note taker is identified, they must be referred and come to the C.L.A.S.S. office to complete the necessary paperwork and receive carbonless note books for note taking. The student requiring note taking services is responsible for obtaining the notes directly from the note taker following each C.L.A.S.S. meeting.  If the note taker is absent from a course session, the student should notify the instructor and request a copy of the instructor’s notes. The student needs to report excessive note taker absences to the C.L.A.S.S. office. Utilizing the services of a note taker does not excuse the client/student from attending C.L.A.S.S..
Sign Language Interpretation and/or Captioning
The student is required to provide the C.L.A.S.S. with a copy of his or her C.L.A.S.S. schedule and request the use of an interpreter and/or captionist on an Accommodation Request form as soon as the student registers.  On the first day of C.L.A.S.S., the student must pick up a copy of the accommodation letter from the C.L.A.S.S. office and give it to the professor.

Any change in the student’s schedule (including withdrawals) must be provided to the C.L.A.S.S. office immediately.  Failure to do so will result in the suspension of the use of the interpreter until the student meets with the C.L.A.S.S. administrator.

If the student knowingly will be unable to attend a course session, the student must notify the C.L.A.S.S. office in advance of the absence.  If the student fails to show up for a course session, and the student has not notified the C.L.A.S.S. office, the interpreter and/or captionist will notify the office of the absence.  Should the student fail to notify the C.L.A.S.S. prior to or immediately following an absence from a course session, use of the interpreter will be temporarily suspended.  Prior to reinstatement, the student must meet with the C.L.A.S.S. administrator to discuss the student’s responsibilities relative to course attendance and notice of any planned or unexpected absences.

If the interpreter and/or captionist is not present when the course session starts, the student should notify the instructor and C.L.A.S.S. office immediately.

When a student needs an interpreter and/or captionist for meetings with instructors, tutoring sessions, or other school related activities, the student should complete a separate Accommodation Request form available at the C.L.A.S.S. office.  This form must be submitted at least seven (7) days in advance of the scheduled event.
Lab and Research Assistants
It is the student’s responsibility to request a lab or research assistant using an Accommodation Request form as soon as he or she registers for C.L.A.S.S.es each semester.  The student must also submit a copy of his or her schedule. The request approval is contingent upon current disability documentation, the C.L.A.S.S. functional needs assessment and other supportive documentation as necessary.

On the first day of the C.L.A.S.S. meeting, the student is responsible for delivering a copy of the accommodation letter to each professor informing the professor that a lab or research assistant is necessary to assist the student in the course. The professor may need to help with securing a lab or research assistant following the protocol outlined in the accommodation letter if the student has not previously procured an assistant.

The student must remember that the lab or research assistant may only physically assist by following directions given by the student.

Any change in the student’s schedule (including withdrawals) must be provided to the C.L.A.S.S. office immediately.  Failure to do so will result in the suspension of the use of the lab or research assistant until the student meets with the C.L.A.S.S. personnel.

If the student knowingly will be unable to attend course session, the student must notify the C.L.A.S.S. office in advance of the session.  If the student fails to show up for the course session, the lab or research assistant will notify the C.L.A.S.S. of the absence.  After one unnoticed absence from a course session, use of the lab or research assistant will be temporarily suspended.  Prior to reinstatement the student must meet with the C.L.A.S.S. administrator to discuss the student’s responsibilities relative to course attendance and notice of planned or unexpected absences.

If the lab or research assistant is not present when the course session starts, the student should notify the instructor and C.L.A.S.S. office immediately.

When a student needs a lab or research assistant for meetings with instructors, tutoring sessions or other school related activities, the student should complete a separate Accommodation Request form available at the C.L.A.S.S. office. This form must be submitted at least seven (7) days in advance of the date needed.
Personal Assistants
Nevada State College does not provide personal assistants. Personal assistants are people that assist with personal activities, such as (but not limited to):  eating, breathing, bathing, urinating, changing clothing, manipulating medical devices or equipment, storing and delivering medication, transferring to and from wheelchairs and automobiles, and similar activities.

If a student requires the use of a personal assistant, the student will need to obtain his or her own personal assistant.
