As a demonstration of support and commitment to Nevada State College’s School of Nursing, the Nevada Legislature earlier this month appropriated $3.5 million to the college to begin the planning and design process for its second, State-supported building: the Nursing & Science Building.

Nursing continues to be the college’s most popular program with more than 550 students either enrolled in or pre-registered for the program.  Since its opening in 2002, Nevada State College has graduated 223 nurses, the vast majority of which are working in hospitals and clinics across the Las Vegas Valley.

Planning for Nursing & Science Building is only in the concept phase, but Nursing faculty members, lead by Dean Connie Carpenter, have already discussed possible guiding principles that will frame the overall theme of the building.

“The Nursing & Science Building must establish a sense of academic mission and place on campus,” said Dean Carpenter.  “It should incorporate sustainable design features across the natural environment, foster reflection through the use of indoor and outdoor contemplation areas, and exhibit our interconnected, holistic approach to the profession.”

Preliminary plans for the building call for a three-story structure that includes:

• Gathering places for students including a lounge and café
• Enhanced technology 150-seat auditorium
• Garden courtyard, faculty offices, visitor parking
• Two adjoining, 40-seat classrooms
• One 110-seat lecture halls (one w/ capability for distance learning)
• Two 32-seat computer classroom
• Two 45-seat classroom (w/ capability for distance learning)
• Two 18-seat seminar rooms
• Two 15-seat group study rooms
