LAS Greatest Need: Establishment of the Writing Center on Campus

Web-based Experiment Scheduling System
Amount: $475
Promotes the pursuit of research endeavors on campus. Improves research productivity of faculty and gives students valuable opportunities to conduct or take part in research. (SONA systems)
Two Text Book Vouchers
Amount: $500
Award is based on merit for academic performance to help with retention of continuing students.
Turning Point Student Response System
Amount: $700
The system allows students to submit answers to in-class questions anonymously in real-time. It provides instructor with an opportunity to gauge learning progress and make adjustments on the fly.
$100 for Turning Point software, $600 for 30 response clickers
This is a one-time only expense (barring the replacement of broken response clickers)
Books
Amount: $1,000
Enrich NSC library by enhancing the current limited collections of English, History, Ethnic Studies, Physics, Biology, Environmental Science and Astronomy books. Choose book resources in the area of your choice.
Guest Speakers
Amount: $1000
Provide students with exposure to new developments in the fields of Natural Sciences. Amount includes $500 for plane, $100/night x2, $50 food and $250 honorarium for one guest speaker.

Provide the Anatomy and Physiology students with visual and hands-on experience to improve learning.
Science Direct Health and Life Sciences Online Database
Amount: $2,230 Tier I
Our students need access to primary publications in science to learn how to perform and utilize literature research.

Cadaver
Amount: $2,300 + $1000 for transportation
Anatomy and Physiology is one of the foundational courses for our Nursing students. True understanding of human anatomy will be greatly enhanced through cadavers from the Body Donation Program.
11" Telescope
Amount: $2,800
Helps improve quality of NSC core classes: AST 103, 104 and 105 (Astronomy and Astronomy Lab).
Faculty and Staff Performance Awards
Amount: $3,000/
recipient
Helps improve employee satisfaction and motivation; provides opportunity to pursue scholarship and pedagogical development. Funding rewards excellence in teaching, scholarship, or other occupational service.
Academic Scholarships for LAS Majors
Amount: $1,000- $5,000
each
Allows NSC to retain excellent students and gives them more time to devote to their studies.
MLA Electronic Database
Amount: $5,000
(at least)
The MLA Database is the most highly reputed and comprehensive collection of academic materials for literature and foreign language studies (as well as other disciplines).
Funding for Student Newspaper
Amount: $5,000
(per student/per year)
An experiential learning opportunity for students looking to pursue a communications career. Greater paper presence may help to create a stronger sense of campus community.
Desired support for 3 students- $15,000/year ($2000/year editorial stipends, $3,000/year for materials)
Faculty Performance Award (Competitive Scholarship/Research Program)
Amount: $5,000
/recipient
Funding to award excellence in teaching, scholarship, or other occupational service. Provides opportunity for course releases to pursue scholarship and pedagogical development.
Amount covers buy out of 2 courses, yearly
Research Funding for Student Projects
Amount: $5,000
/year
Given that few faculty members procure grant funding, these funds would create research opportunities that otherwise might not exist. The funds would help enhance the research productivity of faculty.
Distribution: $500- 1st place, $300- 2nd place, $200- 3rd place, $3,000- Supplies & Participants, $1,000- Community Mentors
Internship Funding (Award- Undergraduate Competition)
Amount: $5,000
/year
Provides an opportunity for experiential learning and develops potential job inroads for students. Funding also creates a stronger link between NSC and the surrounding community.
Five positions valued at $1,000 each; funding can be used for any purpose, but presumably it would allow students to work fewer hours at their normal place of employment.
Student Writing Tutor Stipend
Amount: $5,000
each
As NSC does not yet have a Writing Center, we have a strong need for excellent writing tutors. These tutors would work about 10-15 hours a week and assist students with their papers and with the writing process.
Funding for Academic or Executive Guest Speakers
Amount: $6,000
/year
Exposes students to experts from various disciplines, which could serve as a boon to their knowledge and their enthusiasm for the field. Guest speakers could give a campus-wide speech, but also could be encouraged to meet with students for individual mentoring.
Four guest speakers each year. For each speaker: $700 for hotel and transportation, $200 for lunch with faculty, $600 for dinner with students and faculty, resulting in an individual total of $1,500.
Art & Sculptures Aesthetics for New LAS Building
Amount: $7,500
Art and sculptures for the beautification of the new LAS buildings. Project would be designed to showcase Southern Nevada artists and would improve the appeal of the buildings as well as student satisfaction.
Medical Torso Model (Muscular)
Amount: $8,995
Provide Anatomy and Physiology students with visual and hands-on experience to improve learning.
