James B. Gibson was elected Mayor of the City of Henderson in May 1997 and re-elected to his third term in 2005. Mayor Gibson serves with his fellow council members as the legislative branch of the city of Henderson. He serves the entire Henderson community, which was named in 2006 by MONEY magazine as one of the top 20 places in the United States to live. As the second largest city in Nevada, Henderson has grown by 304% since 1990, and has become known nationally as a premier residential community throughout a period of staggering growth. The population is projected to exceed 517,000 by 2030.
Mayor Gibson is a native Nevadan, born in Las Vegas and a resident of Henderson for nearly 54 years. He was educated in the Clark County School District, earned his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1972 and his law degree from the California Western School of Law in 1975. He formerly served as general counsel for the operating subsidiaries of American Pacific Corporation. He has been a practicing attorney in the areas of business and commercial law, and litigation for 32 years.
Mayor Gibson is active in civic affairs and currently serves as secretary-treasurer of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority Board of Directors. He also serves as a member of the Nevada Development Authority Board of Directors, the Las Vegas Events Board of Directors, the Civilian Military Council, and the city of Henderson Redevelopment Agency. In addition, he represents the city on the Federal Lands Sub-Committee and has been active on various committee assignments for the Clark County Bar Association. He previously served as a member of the Regional Transportation Commission and as Chairman of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee for eleven legislative sessions.
In 2007, Mayor Gibson received the Nevada State College President's Medal. The Boy Scouts of America Boulder Dam Area Council awarded Mayor Gibson the Good Scout Award in 2002 and in 2004 the Silver Beaver Award. He also received the 2002 Humanitarian Award from the National Jewish Medical and Research Center. He was named the 1994 Henderson Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Member.
