Bachelor of Arts in English

Mission Statement

The mission of the English department is to provide students with the necessary tools to express their thoughts in writing and speaking in such a way as to benefit them in their subsequent classes in all fields, in their jobs and careers, and for their personal enrichment.

This mission has links to all three of NSC’s core outcomes; communication and critical thinking consist of two of the three outcomes for the English major, and effective citizenship is related to the ability to use language to forge and maintain relationships with students, professors, employers, and other important people in a student’s life.  Standards are maintained through the faculty’s rigorous evaluation of written work, such as essays and research papers, and through exams and papers that reflect the students’ achievement in understanding the content of the courses.
