Residency Requirements

The Office of Admissions determines state residency for tuition purposes. If Nevada State College cannot determine a student's state residency based on the submitted application, further documentation will be required for proof of Nevada resident status.
Consideration for Nevada Residency:
The student must demonstrate continuous presence in the state at least one year prior to the date of first enrollment in any Nevada college, with no ties to any other state and intend to permanently reside in the state of Nevada.  This can be established either by the parents’ primary residence or the student’s primary residence in this state (only if the parents do not claim the student on their taxes and/or do not reside in Nevada).  Upon evaluation of residency section of the application, the student may be required to provide the college with further proof of residency and complete the Application for Resident status.  The student must provide all items in list A and at least one from list B.

List A
  • proof of residence – lease agreement or mortgage information
  • a valid Nevada driver’s license
  • proof of income prior year’s taxes – if completed with Nevada address or w-2 from prior year or pay stubs
  • a valid Nevada vehicle registration

List B
  • a valid voter registration in Nevada
  • utility bills – electricity, water or gas (not including telephone or cable)
  • bank statement

Note:  Those students who are the dependents of, or are themselves, a person that was transferred to Nevada by an employer, military personnel, an employee of NSHE or an educator in the Clark County School District may have Nevada residency prior to the one year requirement and are required to provide proof of such at the time of application.

Other Circumstances for Nevada Residency:
Military personnel stationed in Nevada or dependents of Military personnel stationed in Nevada are given Nevada Residency, but the student must bring a copy of station orders that lists all of the dependents to the Office of Admissions.

Licensed employees of a public school in Nevada or dependents of said employees are given Nevada Residency, but the student must bring a copy of the contract of employment and something verifying dependent status (e.g. birth certificate or tax information).

NSHE employees or dependents of NSHE employees are given Nevada Residency, but the student must bring a copy of the contract of employment and something verifying dependent status (e.g. birth certificate or tax information).

Employees transferred to Nevada or dependents of someone transferred to Nevada for purpose of employment are given Nevada Residency, but must provide the college with a letter from the employer stating this fact.

Consideration for Western Undergraduate Exchange Students:
The student must demonstrate continuous presence in one of the participant states listed for at least one year prior to the intended date of first enrollment at Nevada State College. This can be established either by the guardian parent’s primary residence or the student’s primary residence if the parent does not claim the student on his or her taxes and/or do not reside in Nevada.

The following states participate in the program: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.  Any student who would like to be considered for the reduced tuition rate available, must complete the Application for Resident Status.

Application for Resident Status:
Download the application and send the application and required support documentation to the Office of Admissions.  It is the policy of Nevada State College not to evaluate resident status for prior semesters.  A student is required to complete an application for resident status upon completion of the continuous presence requirement.  It is also the policy of Nevada State College not to accept applications for resident status during the semester that a student wishes to receive Nevada Residency.
