Welcome from NSC Faculty
“My experience at NSC has truly been nothing but positive. The faculty are very welcoming and for the most part a fun and sometimes crazy group of really committed professors. I have seen students grow in leaps and bounds and I am so proud to be part of their academic and professional development. Lastly I would say that LAS is so family friendly which really makes a difference.”
Shirli Brautbar, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of History
“I came to NSC from a large research institution in the south east. I was looking for a smaller environment that valued teaching. I have loved my experience here and the opportunity to help design and lead a new program. I value the freedom to truly express my ideas and the flexibility in my teaching applications. The faculty, staff, and students have been great to work with."
Myron Burns, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Counseling
“I can’t imagine working at a more rewarding institution than NSC. Nowhere else would I have the unique and incredibly insightful experience of helping build a program and curriculum. Unlike anywhere else I have taught, NSC students value their education; first and foremost, they come here to learn. I am honored to be able to serve such a dedicated student body. My faculty colleagues and I feel engaged and invested in helping make NSC the best college it can possibly be, and I feel privileged to work with such a talented group.”
Daniel Grassian, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of English
“At NSC you really feel you can make a difference. At other institutions, new faculty are often relegated to teaching introductory surveys and waiting out their time on the tenure track, but here new faculty are involved in creating innovative interdisciplinary courses, writing curriculum, planning for the college’s future, and developing both academic and student life-oriented programs. At times, it can be a challenging undertaking, but it is also empowering and amazingly rewarding.”
Peter La Chapelle, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of History
Faculty Advisor to the Scorpion's Tale student newspaper
“My first year at NSC has been tremendous. I came here expecting an opportunity to work in an environment where teaching is truly rewarded, to help build and develop the curriculum of an emerging college, and to work with a small, very-talented group of interdisciplinary faculty (and, to be perfectly honest, to escape the brutal Northeastern winters I experienced at Williams College). Surprisingly, my expectations have been so thoroughly surpassed I wouldn’t even care if the temperature never went above 30 degrees.”
Tony Scinta, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Psychology
“I came to NSC after teaching at a mid-sized four-year state university. The idea of being part of a growing college where I could play a major role in the development of a sociology program excited me—it’s not very often that you get that opportunity in higher education. As a farm girl from Oklahoma, never in a million years could have imagined I would live in Las Vegas, but I decided that the draw of NSC was enough to give it a shot. And I was right! I am very impressed by the enthusiasm and dedication of the NSC faculty. It is refreshing to be at an institution where all faculty members take teaching seriously and constantly strive to improve their teaching style and develop engaging and enlightening in-class activities. I know this environment will encourage me to become a more effective instructor and I look forward to building a sociology program that will be a credit to NSC and that I can take pride in.”
Gwen Sharp, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Sociology
"I came to NSC in Fall 2005 to a small but growing college with a grand vision for the future. In my short time here, I’ve seen that vision take shape, change in many ways, and come to fruition in others. California was my home before this, where I went to college at a big school (Cal Poly SLO) and graduate school at an even bigger school (UC San Diego). The goals and priorities of my colleagues mirror mine in so many ways, that it was easy to make the transition to a small college. It has been exciting and challenging to participate in the building of a school. We all still feel that pioneering spirit… NSC ho!"
Jason Lee, Ph.D.
