- Praxis Exams

- What are the PRAXIS I (PPST) and II exams?
The Praxis I and II are exams that states use as part of their teaching licensing certification process. Nevada requires all teachers to have passed the Praxis I and II before being hired as a full-time teacher. The Praxis I tests measure basic academic skills. The Praxis II tests measure general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills. More information on the Praxis exams can be found in the School of Education Handbook or on the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website www.ets.org
- Am I required to take the Praxis exams?
Yes, the PPST is a prerequisite for all 300-400 level education courses and for School of Education admission. The Praxis II must be taken prior to the completion of student teaching. - Fingerprinting

- Do I have to be fingerprinted to be admitted to the School of Education?
Yes, the Clark County School District requires all students participating in field experiences or student teaching to be fingerprinted. Northern Nevada students will need to contact their local school district regarding their fingerprinting policy. More information on the fingerprint requirement can be found in the School of Education Handbook.
- I am a substitute teacher and was fingerprinted by the Clark County School District. Do I have to be fingerprinted again?
Yes, the Clark County School District requires a separate fingerprint report.
- What if I have a Sheriff’s Card, have been fingerprinted by my employer or have been fingerprinted by the police department, do I have to be fingerprinted again?
Yes, the Clark County School District requires a separate fingerprint report.
- Why do I have to be fingerprinted again? Doesn’t the Clark County School District keep my fingerprints?
Fingerprints are sent to the FBI. The FBI issues a single report to the Clark County School District, and prints are destroyed. It is a regulation that anyone entering Clark County School District in a capacity where they can be left alone with students is fingerprinted; no matter how many divisions they work with/for.
- Will I have to be fingerprinted every semester?
If you take education courses each semester then you will not to have to be fingerprinted again. If you have a break in education courses you will need to be fingerprinted again. Example: You took education courses in Fall 2002 but not in Spring 2003. Summer break does not classify as a break in courses.
- Do I have to be fingerprinted again for student teaching?
Yes, Clark County School District requires all prospective student teachers to be fingerprinted prior to placement.
- Field Experiences

- What are field experiences?
Field experience activities are designed to be developmental. Field experiences will consist of classroom observation, individual tutoring, small group work and large group instruction in local elementary and secondary schools.
- Do I have to participate in field experiences?
Yes, NSC requires from 5 to 20 hours of field experiences for each education course. All education majors will participate in a planned series of field experiences, at an assigned school, as an important part of their training. Field experiences begin with the first education course and conclude with student teaching. This enables education students to receive guidance and feedback as they apply educational theory and practice in school settings.
- How do I receive an observation placement for my class?
The School of Education submits an observation placement request to the Clark County School District at the beginning of each semester. Your instructor will distribute the assignments once the Clark County School District finds a suitable placement.
- After I am assigned to a school, can I change my observation placement to a school closer to my home?
No, observation placements are assigned by the Clark County School District based on pre-assigned regions for each class.
- How soon should I contact my school once I receive my observation placement?
It is extremely important that you contact your assigned school immediately. Even if you are not planning to do the observation right away.
- I am a full-time teacher. Do I need to observe in a school?
No. Current full-time teachers are not required to complete observations; however they should complete reflection sheets on their own teaching as a replacement assignment.
- I am a long-term substitute teacher. Do I need to observe in a school?
Yes. Long-term subs may observe in their own schools, with written permission from the administration, but not in their own classrooms.
- Student Teaching

You will need to complete a student teaching application one semester prior to your internship. Additional information on the program admission process can be found in the School of Education Handbook.
- Do I have to have a certain GPA for student teaching?
School of Education requires a 2.0 GPA or higher to student teach.
- Where do I turn in my student teaching application?
Student teaching applications can be returned by mail or in-person to the School of Education at 311 S. Water Street, Henderson, NV 89015
- I submitted a student teaching application. What if I do not pass all my required classes prior to my student teaching or my GPA falls below a 2.0?
Your student teaching application will be denied and your placement cancelled. You will need to reapply for student teaching once all classes are complete and/or your GPA is a 2.0 or higher.
- Education Courses

- Where will the education classes be held?
Nevada State College currently has three classroom buildings. The Dawson building is located at 1125 Nevada State Drive, Henderson, the Basic/Water building is located at 303 S. Water Street, Henderson and the Basic/Water II building is located at 311 S. Water Street, Henderson. Most college core classes are offered at the Dawson building while education courses are offered at the Basic/Water I and II buildings. The School of Education also offers courses in Northern Nevada on the Western Nevada Community College campuses.
- When will Nevada State College education classes be offered?
Nevada State College education classes are offered in a variety of formats including online, accelerated, day, and evening times.
