Welcome to Community Based Learning
Community Based Learning (CBL) is a program that sets Nevada State College apart from other higher learning institutions in the state of Nevada. CBL takes the lessons taught in the classroom and reinforces them through involvement in the local community. Students and faculty team with a community partner to tackle a problem or issue that the agency is experiencing. The issue is of some significance in order to allow students to exercise critical thinking, problem analysis, and the application of other skills and tools learned in the classroom. CBL gives students a sense of belonging and ownership in the community and a real world opportunity to put to practice their newly acquired knowledge. Not only does this allow community agencies with scarce resources to benefit from the students' efforts during the project, it also increases the chances of NSC graduates staying in Southern Nevada and sews the seed of future community involvement within them.
The CBL program at Nevada State differentiates itself from most other similar programs across the nation in that every student must complete a CBL course in order to graduate. Specifically, every NSC senior enrolls in a capstone course to join together with a faculty advisor and students from other disciplines to work toward the resolution of a problem or need for a local community agency.
CBL at NSC makes a difference for the students, faculty, the College Community, and the community at large.
