Dr. La Chapelle received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California and has taught history, American studies, and mass communication at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa., George Mason University, in Fairfax, Va., and California State University, Dominguez Hills. A former Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. La Chapelle is the author of Proud to Be an Okie: Cultural Politics, Country Music, and Migration to Southern California (University of California Press, 2007) which received an honorable mention for the Urban History Associationís Kenneth Jackson Award for Best Book in Urban History. The book was also named one of Kansas City Starís ď100 Noteworthy Books of the Year.Ē A former journalist, La Chapelle is adviser to NSCís student newspaper, the Scorpionís Tale, and is working to develop an undergraduate oral history project focused on Hendersonís rich community history. Dr. La Chapelle received NSCís iTeach Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009. He is currently working on a more general book on the history of country music and its intersection with politics.
