Future Vision: A New Nursing & Sciences Facility

The next generation of nurses eagerly looks forward to receiving their education and training inside a state-of-the-art building at Nevada State College. The Nursing & Sciences Building, a $32 million, 60,000 square-foot facility now in the planning stages, is being designed to accommodate the growth of the college’s School of Nursing.

NSC’s need for a new building is largely driven by the critical shortage of nursing graduates nationwide. By 2016, America’s nursing shortage is expected to reach the one million mark. In order to meet the nation’s health care needs, the Council on Physician and Nurse Supply projects 30% more nurses need to graduate annually. Nowhere is the shortage more severe than in Nevada.

“Nevada State College was established to provide educational opportunities to Nevadans, and even with the budget cuts we continue working toward just that,” said NSC President Dr. Fred Maryanski. To help address the needs of an acute health care crisis, Nevada State College needs to build a facility that will accommodate more nursing students and provide them with a quality learning environment. NSC has been working diligently with the Nevada State Legislature and the private sector to secure funds for the building’s construction.”

With a new building on campus, Nevada State College will be able to serve additional students in achieving their dreams of becoming outstanding health care professionals.

“The Nursing and Sciences Building will help establish a sense of academic mission and place on campus,” said Dr. Shirlee Snyder, Interim Dean of Nursing.

During Nevada’s 2009 legislative session, Nevada State College, together with the Nevada System of Higher Education, unsuccessfully requested $26 million of the $32 million needed for construction. The college is currently working to raise its share of the building’s cost in preparation for the 2011 legislative session.

The Nursing & Sciences Building will be the second permanent structure on the college’s 500-acre campus located in the foothills of Henderson. The three-story building will feature eleven classrooms, gross laboratories, computer labs and media center, faculty offices, conference rooms, multi-purpose rooms and a lecture hall.

Since the nursing program’s inception in 2003, the number of students enrolled has tripled, making it NSC’s most popular baccalaureate program.

“Students are finding our nursing program to be an excellent fit for their needs, which is a wonderful event to behold. I’m excited by the long-term impact our students will have on our community,” said President Maryanski.
NSC currently offers three different academic tracks for its nursing students, including a one-year accelerated program for students who have already earned a baccalaureate degree in another field.

As of May 2009, the School of Nursing has graduated over 400 nurses. Many of NSC’s nursing graduates work in hospitals and clinics within the Las Vegas Valley and provide vital services for the community.
