Message from the Dean

Welcome to the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS), the largest center for teaching and learning at NSC. In LAS, students find a wide variety of majors in fields such as psychology, history, biology, and English. We also offer more than 20 minors and concentrations in fields such as counseling, ethnic studies, and sociology.

The Liberal Arts & Sciences has a great deal to offer you beyond the nature of the disciplines themselves. For example, many psychology graduates actually go on to work in business settings like human resources and advertising. English majors often become attorneys or journalists. Our curriculum was built around this premise and we help you develop essential skills that employers seek in every area. Given that the average person changes careers nearly five times in their lifetime; your education should be as broad as possible, allowing you the flexibility to be successful in a wide spectrum of jobs. Our graduates perfect these skills as they become keen critical thinkers, high quality communicators, and effective citizens of their local and global community. No matter what discipline you choose, our curriculum will prepare you for a wide variety of careers in an engaging, highly interactive environment.

Our talented professors are accomplished teacher-scholars devoted to personalized education, active learning, and student success. We keep our classes small and intimate, so you will never be regarded as a number, but rather as part of a vibrant academic community. We know that the best way to learn is by doing and you will be actively involved in your classes and your curriculum. Our faculty members spend a lot of time with our students outside of the classroom and offer opportunities to engage in research projectscommunity-based learning activities, and fun, extracurricular activities.

Come see what we have to offer. Interested in helping the world become more sustainable? Check out our environmental and resource science program. Are you the kind of person that people seek out when they need help? Take a look at our counseling courses. Want to become a mathemagician and impress your friends at parties? As the Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences, I invite you to join our community and to experience first hand our commitment, passion, and dedication. We look forward to providing you with an excellent educational experience as well as the foundation for a rewarding future.
