Academic Enrichment:

Upward Bound is a year round intensive pre-college program that provides eligible admitted students with tutoring in core subject areas, ACT Test Prep, academic advising, financial aid counseling, college admission preparation, high school proficiency preparation, a mandatory Saturday class program, and a 5 week College Prep Academy in the summer.

College and Cultural Tours:

Upward Bound scholars may attend college and cultural tours based on their attendance, performance, commitment to college, and participation in academic programs. Selection is highly competitive. The purpose of these tours is to expose students to culture, colleges, universities, and experiences they may not have normally. These experiences will provide students an opportunity to engage among their peers in college, be equipped with several points of reference, and welcome competition in college. Tours have included visits to Hampton University, University of Southern California, Northern Arizona University, San Diego State University, Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. Naval Academy, Seattle University, and the University of Nevada, Reno. Cultural tours have included snorkeling in La Jolla Cove in San Diego, hiking at the Grand Canyon, living on campus at the University of California, San Diego, and discovering parts of the city of Seattle underground.

Tutoring:

The Upward Bound Tutorial Program held on the campus of Basic and Eldorado High Schools, strives to make an impact on our students’ ability to pass proficiency exams, increase grade point averages, and assist with student learning and achievement. A team of professional tutors assist students one on one or in group settings with subjects that include mathematics through Calculus, science, reading/language arts, history and foreign language.

Mentoring:

The success of Upward Bound students relies on positive mentors who can guide students inside and outside of the classroom. Upward Bound staff and professionals from a variety of career paths; establish a rapport with students and families and work with them throughout their time in UB.

Work Study Program:

Upward Bound may provide a Work Study Program for eligible students, depending on the availability of funds. Work Study exposes students to professionals who have earned a four year baccalaureate degree. Students receive a stipend for their participation in the Work Study Program.
