Alumni Profiles-Secondary Education
Kristi Newman: Secondary Education, English, Class of 2009
- Why did you decide to study at Nevada State College?
I chose NSC for several reasons. They offered the classes I wanted at times that were convenient to me, a working mother. I knew that I wouldn't have to deal with frat boys and parties; I wanted a "grown-up" college experience. The tuition was less expensive as well. I knew that the school had been funded to train educators and nurses in particular, so I felt assured that it would have a quality Teacher Prep Program.
- What was it that made your experience at NSC most memorable?
I really enjoyed being a part of the school newspaper, The Scorpion's Tale. I honestly wouldn't have done it on my own time, but took the class as a requirement. I loved contributing to something that would be in print for others to read.
- What are two strengths of the teacher prep program?
Most of the professors in the Teacher Prep Program are phenomenal. I had several professors who clearly showed that they were knowledgeable in what they taught, and, more importantly, that they cared about my success. Many of my professors cared about more than my grades; they cared about what I learned, and what I could use in my own classroom someday. They practice what they preach, allowing students to do in order to learn, as well as construct their own knowledge. Also, because of the smaller class size, they were able to give personal attention, and enabling me to get more from each class.
Karlana Kulseth: Secondary Education, English, Class of 2009
- Why did you decide to study at Nevada State College?
I chose NSC because of the small class sizes and the different classes offered. I also liked the fact that I could receive a degree for the fraction of the cost of other Universities.
- What was it that made your experience at NSC most memorable?
I would have to say the fact that my professors always had my well being within the class at heart. My professors were always there if I had a question, and always gave me feedback, both positive and constructive. Because of this willingness to help me become a better student in my field of study, I feel I have grown by leaps and bounds in my content area.
- What are two strengths of the teacher prep program?
One thing I have loved about the Teacher Prep Program is the fact that we have to complete observation hours each and every education course taken. While it may appear to be a hassle, it really helped me apply what I learned in class within the same semester versus waiting to apply everything during my student teaching. I also believe that by my visiting different schools, it has helped me decide what region I would love to work in! I believe that completing hours each semester is a strength within the program because it helps future teachers really hone in on what grade they want to teach.
The second strength of the program is that with the small class sizes, we seem to get more done work wise, and get more personal attention from the professors. Having attended another college before NSC, I always felt neglected in my classes that had 40+ students to one professor. It was like my opinion really didn't count or matter. At NSC, when you only have 10-15 students in one class, it becomes a more intimate setting, where you can connect with your peers and your professor, which was another reason why I chose NSC!
