For Student or Volunteer Note Takers

The Resource Center for Students with Disabilities (R.C.S.D.) provides federally mandated services to students with special needs attending classes at the College. Students may be approached by other students in a class and asked for help. Other times, the professor may request a volunteer to take notes for another student. For information about taking notes for a special-needs student - and/or to make an appointment to complete a formal application process - please contact the R.C.S.D. office at (702) 992-2180, email us at NSC.RCSD@nsc.nevada.edu , or download the forms below. You can bring them into our office, fax, or email them.

Note Taker Application

Benefits:
  • In lieu of cash payment, the Note Taker will receive a $100.00 tuition credit for future coursework taken at Nevada State College, to be directly applied toward his/her outstanding fees for the following term. Stipends will vary for Note Takers taking notes for more than one class. Please consult with an RCSD Administrator.
  • Traditional volunteer Note Taker services are welcome as well. Traditional volunteers will receive a Certificate of Appreciation and may include the service on a resumé of qualifications, or apply the note-taking time toward any service hours required for academic completion.
  • Note Taking is a required accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act and is vital to the success of your fellow student. You will receive the satisfaction of making an invaluable contribution to the academic success of a fellow member of our NSC family.
Responsibilities:
  • As a volunteer Note Taker, the volunteering student will be responsible for providing notes, in the classroom, for a specific student. The volunteer Note Taker is not required to provide any additional assistance outside the scheduled class time. (You may choose to assist your special-needs student in any other way you mutually deem appropriate, with the understanding that that assistance will fall outside the scope f the Note Taker activity.)
  • The R.C.S.D. office will pply the Note Taker with carbonless-paper notebooks, so notes may be provided to the special-needs student after each class session.
  • If the Note Taker drops the course or cannot fulfill his/her Note Taking duties, it is his/her responsibility to notify the R.C.S.D. office immediately. The tuition credit will be prorated by dividing the $100.00 credit by the total number of weeks in the term to determine a weekly rate. The Note Taker will receive a tuition credit at the weekly rate for the number of weeks s/he provided note taking services.
  • Note Taking services do not replace the student’s attendance to the course.
  • If a special-needs student is absent for two or more consecutive classes, please notify the R.C.S.D. office.
