About the Teacher Preparation Program

The Teacher Preparation Program is designed around a framework of best practice research that instills the skills, knowledge, and art of teaching as well as the practical application experiences necessary to prepare quality teachers.

Our program is standards-based. The standards set forth by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education guide the development and evaluation of the programs and related activities of the Teacher Preparation Program. The standards of the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards are integrated into the program's framework. The framework is the benchmark by which student performance competencies and the effectiveness of all school programs and activities are assessed.

The framework is composed of four research-based domains:

  • Domain 1: Planning and Preparation
Graduates will demonstrate knowledge of content, instruction and resources. They will combine this knowledge with an understanding of their students to select instructional goals and design a coherent means of instruction and assessment of student learning.

  • Domain 2: The Classroom Environment Graduates will demonstrate the ability to create an environment of respect and rapport required to support a culture of learning by managing classroom procedures, student behaviors and the organization of physical space.

  • Domain 3: Instruction
Graduates will communicate clearly and accurately and use questioning, discussion and other appropriate techniques to engage student learning, provide feedback and remain responsive and flexible regarding the delivery of instruction.

  • Domain 4: Professional Responsibilities
Graduates will demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on their teaching based on accurate record keeping, communication and engagement with families, their contributions to the larger educational community and their growth as a professional.
