Discover FYE Teaching & Learning

At NSC, we want great teaching to inspire students, which is why the First-Year Experience program places a strong emphasis on creating a learning experience that is effective and engaging.

Some of the teaching and learning practices we use in FYE courses include:

  • Collaborative and cooperative learning. Group activities and lessons that span multiple classes (such as ENG 101 and PSY 101) allow students to learn actively through the shared discovery of knowledge.
  • Experiential learning. Field trips, labs, community service, and internships give students a “hands-on” opportunity to learn and apply their knowledge outside the classroom.
  • Problem-based learning. Students work on and attempt to solve real-world issues. For example, students might examine ways to develop a cure for cancer or come up with a program to help people be more effective in the workplace.
  • Debates. Debates challenge students to apply a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills to an engaging activity. Debating gives students a chance to develop strong critical thinking and communication skills as they apply course concepts.
  • Experiments. Data collection introduces students to the benefits and challenges of learning about the world firsthand. Students can test their own ideas and share their findings with other members of the campus community.
